Chapter 129: I’m So Glad to Be Friends With You

The afternoon’s activity was to leave the territory and explore the Forest of Stars together.

Before they left, Dan Xingyu caught sight of that vast expanse of imposing black ancient trees.

His first reaction was, “If this forest were on Blue Star, it would absolutely become a viral check-in spot.”

As they drew closer and the survival panel scanned the War Ancient Trees, Dan Xingyu noticed the “In Recovery” status and fell silent for several seconds.

He looked at Qi Yu with genuine sincerity. “Bro, are you sure you don’t have some kind of hidden bloodline? Like, you know, an elf, or some descendant of an ancient race or something?”

Qi Yu understood his meaning in a second.

He replied smartly, “What about you? Do you have some hidden dragon bloodline? Is that how you could contract a golden dragon?”

Dan Xingyu answered with a perfectly straight face, “Of course not. I just had a bit of luck, and a little more strength, that’s all.”

Qi Yu’s ears perked up at the words “luck.”

He echoed Dan Xingyu’s phrasing, “Well, maybe I’ve had a lot of lucky encounters. After all, my name is Qiyu—‘Lucky Encounter.’”

They looked at each other and both burst out laughing.

Joking and chatting, they left the territory.

Qi Yu glanced at the lush forest, feeling a bit regretful. “After Safe Day arrived, the temperature went up and all the ice in the forest melted.”

“If the teleportation array had come a little earlier, you could have come to the forest to collect ice yourself.”

But Dan Xingyu was easygoing about it. “The fact that we managed to add each other as friends during the newbie phase is already the rarest kind of luck. In life, how can anyone expect everything to be perfect?”

Qi Yu thought that was true.

He set aside his regret and began introducing the forest to Dan Xingyu.

“All these leaves are edible,” he said. “The first thing I did when I entered Survival Game was pick some leaves and try them. When I found out they were edible, I was relieved.”

He’d thought, with so much food around, even if Survival Game didn’t provide any, he wouldn’t have to worry about starving.

He never expected Survival Game to be so generous—there was more good food than he could ever eat.

So, he thought, let the leaves keep growing on the trees.

He spoke casually, but Dan Xingyu listened with a pang in his heart.

He thought, if it were him, suddenly dropped into Survival Game, maybe he’d pick a leaf to taste, too.

But if he did, it would probably just be to “see how realistic the game was,” not to check if it could actually fill his stomach.

People who’ve never gone hungry would never think that far ahead.

He remembered, back when he didn’t know Qi Yu’s real age or background, how he’d imagined him as a little bitter melon. And how Qi Yu had emphasized, more than once, “I love Survival Game,” and “Life’s been so much better since I came here.”

He thought, maybe his friend’s past was even more miserable than he’d ever imagined.

But now, after entering Survival Game, all of that was gone.

Dan Xingyu turned to look at the person beside him.

He was striking in appearance, strong, exceptionally gifted, and—apparently—favored by Survival Game itself, with luck to match.

Maybe, after so much hardship, things had finally turned around for him here.

    “Dan Xingyu?”

Qi Yu looked at him, puzzled.

Dan Xingyu had been acting strange all day. Qi Yu had noticed several times now that he’d just stare at him, lost in thought.

Dan Xingyu smoothly started making things up. “I was just wondering what the leaves taste like.”

A leaf was handed over. Qi Yu said, “I don’t know about other places, but the leaves in the Forest of Stars are full of moisture. The taste is just a little astringent, not bitter at all.”

He gave a professional review, “They’re actually pretty good.”

Dan Xingyu took it, chewed thoughtfully. It was indeed juicy, but how was it only a little astringent and not bitter at all?

He slowly savored the bitterness and said to Qi Yu, “I heard in the regional channel that the Golden Sand Desert has a special kind of tree. If you cut the bark, syrup flows out—sweeter than honey.”

“When you come to my place, I’ll let you try it.”

He wasn’t a big fan of sweets, so he’d never gone looking for it.

But right now, he really wanted little Bitter Melon to taste what truly sweet tree sap was like.

As they walked, some of the trees would display a “can be chopped” icon when he got close.

“So, you just chop wood straight from the trees like this?”

    Qi Yu: “Yeah.”

“Nice,” Dan Xingyu said enviously. “For us, we have to dig for ore in the sand first, and when we find it, we have to hack away with a crappy pickaxe. I’m telling you, that sound is so loud.”

“My first night in the newbie phase, when I went back to my shelter, my ears were still ringing with that clanging. I even dreamed about it.”

He watched as Qi Yu took out his staff, a greenish glow spreading from him through the forest.

    “What’s that?”

Qi Yu explained, “A growth spell, and a blessing spell. Whenever I have time to come to the forest, I’ll cast them here.”

“Magic power is easy to recover through cultivation, but if the trees get a blessing, they’ll grow a bit better.”

Dan Xingyu looked at him seriously. “Now I feel like, if Survival Game really does favor you, it’s not hard to understand.”

Maybe Qi Yu was the only player in Survival Game who ever thought to “give back to the forest.”

    .

After the rain stopped on Safe Day, the swifts were almost nowhere to be seen. Some of the mutated creatures that had disappeared before started showing up again.

The Survival System had warned: on Safe Day, as long as players didn’t provoke them, mutated creatures wouldn’t attack first.

But in Survival Game, mutated creatures = loot = a chance for treasure chests.

No one was obligated to let mutated creatures leave unscathed!

For the first time, Qi Yu experienced the joy of exploring and running the map with a trustworthy teammate.

They ran into two mutated black bears.

Dan Xingyu said, “Left one’s mine, right one’s yours. Let’s see who can kill faster!”

    Qi Yu: “Okay.”

They encountered a flock of mutated black crows.

Dan Xingyu: “Three, two, one—let’s go! See who can get the most bird heads!”

    Qi Yu: “Okay.”

When there were no monsters, Dan Xingyu would say, “Let’s see which lucky, handsome guy can spot a treasure chest first.”

    “……”

What would have been an ordinary day of exploring and fighting mutated creatures in the forest became so much more fun with Dan Xingyu.

By four in the afternoon, when their exploration ended, Qi Yu actually felt a little reluctant to stop.

Their results: two refined iron chests, four wooden chests, and a pile of mutated creature loot.

“Perfect, three for each of us,” Dan Xingyu said. “I’ll count down, and we’ll open them together—let’s see whose luck is better!”

Qi Yu had never played this kind of game with someone before, and felt a little excited. “Okay. Whoever’s luckier wins, and then what?”

Dan Xingyu: “Hmm, the one with worse luck has to promise the lucky one a favor. How about it?”

    Qi Yu: “Okay.”

Dan Xingyu realized this guy was like a robot programmed to nod—no matter what he suggested, it was always “okay,” total affirmation.

If this were Blue Star, playing games with such an easygoing teammate would be peak emotional value.

    “Three, two, one—”

They both chose to open all their chests.

Dan Xingyu looked at his loot, then at Qi Yu’s.

A question mark slowly appeared above his head.

Wait, is this for real? Are these drop rates serious?

His three chests: a standard weapon blueprint, one kilogram of food, a set of spare clothes, and 10 silver coins.

    That was it.

It was like getting three guaranteed minimums. 🙂

Qi Yu’s three chests: a basic building upgrade blueprint, a blue-quality candelabra, a set of comfortable men’s clothes, a premium fragrance set, a set of exquisite tableware, and a bag of premium flour (20 kilograms).

Dan Xingyu was silent for a moment, then slowly said, “If the heavens would give me a chance to turn back time, I’d pick a month ago. And when I registered my Survival Game ID, I’d call myself ‘Survival Game is My Treasure.’”

As unbelievable as it sounded, this Survival Game really seemed to reward flattery!

Even if they were good friends, he still had to call him a lucky dog!

“No doubt about it, you win!” Dan Xingyu declared cheerfully. “Go on, what do you want me to do?”

Qi Yu didn’t hesitate at all. “Then I want you to come hang out with me more whenever you’re free.”

    Dan Xingyu: “Hm?”

Qi Yu’s eyes curved in a smile. “I’ve been really happy all day today.”

He counted them off, one by one. “Fishing with you was fun, eating together was fun, exploring the forest was fun, opening treasure chests together was fun…”

At last, he said with bright delight, “Dan Xingyu, I’m so glad to be friends with you.”
