    Chapter 184

    “I…”

Qi Yu thought for a moment and said, “Let me sort things out and start from the beginning.”

It seemed there was no way to make this story short.

Dan Xingyu sensed that his thoughts were probably a bit scattered at the moment, so he said gently, “There’s no rush. Take your time to remember. Or perhaps, would you like to hear about my experience first?”

    Qi Yu nodded.

Guessing that it wouldn’t be long before they left the resource zone, and seeing the little mage still looking dazed, Dan Xingyu simply sat down with him in the pile of fallen leaves.

The two of them sat facing each other, as if they were out on an autumn picnic.

Dan Xingyu began to recount his experience, telling how he had run into a very aloof elf dressed as a ranger and received a quest from him.

He described how the evil spiders truly lived up to their name, so much so that he doubted he’d have the appetite for his next meal.

He also mentioned that fifty people had entered, but only forty-two had completed their quests.

He took a flower from his backpack.

It was a silver, five-petaled blossom, with an unusually long stamen that hung down like a ribbon, giving it an ethereal, fairy-like appearance.

“Isn’t it beautiful?” he said, showing it off to Qi Yu as if presenting a treasure.

Qi Yu replied, “This is called a Spirit-Stamen Flower.”

Dan Xingyu knew he liked to read, and that he had a copy of the “Encyclopedia of Magical Plants.” Smiling, he asked, “Did you read about this in one of your books?”

Qi Yu shook his head. “No.”

This was a flower cultivated by elves, mentioned in the knowledge he’d recently received in a dream.

His next words were, “When we get back, you should pick some fruit from my place and eat it. Eating fruit should help with your nausea.”

Dan Xingyu hadn’t expected him to be concerned about that, but thinking about the little mage’s personality, it seemed perfectly normal.

Nothing is more important than eating.

He fiddled with the flower in his hand. “That elf said, after we return, this flower will turn into a treasure.”

He told his story simply and smoothly, covering all the key points without taking much time at all.

As Qi Yu listened, his emotions gradually settled.

He said, “My experience was different from yours. When I jumped into that mysterious well, I landed on a patch of very soft, beautiful grass.”

“There, I met a golden-haired elf who led me to a tree.”

Qi Yu had just gotten to this part when two beams of light suddenly appeared.

The twenty-four hours were up, and the two of them were teleported out of the resource zone.

Dan Xingyu grinned, “Looks like I’ll have to hear the rest of this story back home, at my leisure.”

    .

Dan Xingyu was an interesting person.

After they were teleported back to the Forest of Stars, he brewed a pot of floral tea, sliced up a plate of fruit, and even set out two plates of snacks he’d brought back from the Mage Association in Jindong City.

The table was piled high with food.

“Alright, now you can tell your story!”

Maybe it was being back in familiar territory, or maybe it was Dan Xingyu’s easygoing attitude, but Qi Yu suddenly felt that being mistaken for an elf wasn’t such a big deal after all.

He casually opened his survival panel, intending to check if any friends had tried to contact him during his twenty-four hours in the resource zone.

But as soon as he opened his personal panel: “…”

The little mage suddenly stared blankly into the air at some invisible point. Dan Xingyu guessed he was looking at his survival panel.

Something seemed off—had something happened in District 01?

Qi Yu was shocked as he looked at his new panel:

Survival ID: I Love Survival Game

    Race: Human/Elf (Awakening)

    Talent Skill: Planting·Variant (Intermediate)

    HP: *

    Attack: *

    Defense: *

    Agility: *

    Spirit: *

He stared in disbelief at the new “Race” field, reading it over and over.

Did I go to the resource zone and come back not even human anymore?

What does “Elf (Awakening)” even mean?

It was one thing for the elves to get it wrong, but why was the survival game joining in too?

With this bombshell in the race column, even all his attribute values turning into asterisks seemed unimportant.

    “Qi Yu?”

Qi Yu snapped back to himself, meeting Dan Xingyu’s concerned gaze.

He took a deep breath and asked, “Dan Xingyu, do you think I look like an elf?”

Dan Xingyu didn’t know why he was suddenly asking this, but nodded, “Very much so!”

Good-looking, plant-based abilities, uses the Yidran Bow, lives in a treehouse, his territory is a garden, his region is the Forest of Stars.

In other words: looks like an elf, has elven talents, uses elven weapons, lives in an elven house, and resides in elven territory.

The little mage was just missing a pair of pointy ears to be an elf!

    Qi Yu: “…”

“What’s wrong?” Dan Xingyu, seeing his silence, laughed. “Don’t tell me you’ve suddenly discovered that you really are an elf?”

    “…”

    Qi Yu still said nothing.

Dan Xingyu felt a jolt in his heart.

His smile faded, and he asked, a little nervously, “Don’t tell me I guessed right?”

Other people couldn’t see his survival panel, but Qi Yu could take a screenshot. “Check your messages.”

Dan Xingyu anxiously opened it and saw—

“Holy—” He couldn’t help but curse.

Then, eyes bright, he stared at Qi Yu, his gaze burning, repeatedly glancing at his ears.

“You really are an elf!” he exclaimed in shock and amazement. “So, will you grow pointy ears in the future?”

He couldn’t help but imagine: not just pointy ears—weren’t elves rarely seen with black hair?

Would he get to see a little mage with long hair and pointed ears?

Qi Yu couldn’t take it anymore. “Even if you keep staring, my ears are not going to turn pointy.”

“But the survival game has officially recognized you as an elf!”

Qi Yu felt this was the real issue. “There must be something wrong.”

Other people might not know his origins, but didn’t he know himself?

He came from the apocalypse, not even from the same world as Blue Star, and even further from the world of the survival game.

He asked Dan Xingyu, “Suppose you lived as a human for over a decade, but one day someone told you you were actually an elf.”

He paused, then changed the example: “Or told you, actually, you were—would you be able to accept it?”

Dan Xingyu’s eyes sparkled. “If it were me, I’d be overjoyed!”

    “Come on—”

Qi Yu: …I really have a generational gap with you Blue Star people.

The issue isn’t whether I’m happy or not—it’s how did things end up like this?

How did a perfectly normal apocalypse survivor end up turning into an elf?

Seeing how confused he was, Dan Xingyu handed him a cup of tea and said gently, “Maybe there’s something hidden here. Who knows, maybe this is some kind of reward from the survival game—a chance to gain the bloodline of a long-lived race?”

“Weren’t you going to tell me about your experience in the resource zone?”

    Qi Yu: “Mm.”

Actually, his experience was even simpler than Dan Xingyu’s.

Because, after seeing that great tree, he basically just fell asleep.

“In my dreams, I had a very long, long dream. In it, I was filled with all sorts of knowledge—the origins of elves, their civilization, their talents…”

At first, Dan Xingyu had genuinely thought the little mage had simply obtained the elves’ inheritance in the resource zone.

Because he’d received an elven inheritance, his race was now showing as “Elf (Awakening).”

But the more he listened to Qi Yu, the more wrong it sounded.

    No, something was very wrong.

He couldn’t help but interject, “From what I know, this sounds a lot like inherited memory.”

    “Inherited memory?”

“I’ve read about it in some novels,” Dan Xingyu said. “It usually appears in mythical or long-lived races. The young of such races, while still in their mother’s womb or even as eggs, inherit their bloodline’s talents and memories.”

So here’s the question: would a bloodline obtained from the survival game come with inherited memory too?

He began to scrutinize Qi Yu again.

Qi Yu ignored him, extending his right hand to show Dan Xingyu the new ring on his finger.

Dan Xingyu’s first attention was on Qi Yu’s hand.

The green looked great against his skin—the little mage’s hand was practically like a piece of white jade.

    So pretty!

“After I woke up, I felt like my whole body had changed a lot.”

“My spiritual power, my senses, my physical abilities—everything improved.”

He hadn’t been able to use his panel in the resource zone, but after returning and opening it, he found all his attribute data had turned into asterisks.

His talent skill, Planting, had also risen from beginner to intermediate.

“And then, on my finger, there was this storage ring.”

Compared to everything else, it was the contents of the ring that puzzled him most.

He showed a look of mingled confusion and complexity. “Inside, it’s all food and supplies.”

If he took them out, people outside probably wouldn’t recognize a single thing.

But because he’d just received so much knowledge and memory in his dreams, he knew them all.

Spring of Life: Drinking it can strengthen the body and purify the flesh.

His storage ring held a glass bottle—a storage item—filled with who knows how much Spring of Life, enough for him to drink as water for at least a year.

Linglong Jade Fruit Juice: a nutritional supplement essential for elven children, to be drunk from birth until the end of childhood.

Crown Leaf Pillow: made by drying and specially preparing the leaves of the Crown Tree.

Sleeping on it long-term can nourish the spirit and enhance talent.

There was even a unicorn egg inside!

Because unicorns are elven children’s favorite companions.

Qi Yu read off the list to Dan Xingyu, his tone growing more and more complicated.

The listener’s expression grew increasingly complex as well.

He looked at Qi Yu with a strange gaze. “My lord, you can’t possibly really be…”

    An elven child, could you?

    Then what about me???

    Qi Yu frowned. “Impossible.”

“Look at me.” He pointed to himself. “I’m a fully grown human, already nineteen years old. If I really were an elf, from what I know from the memories I received, a nineteen-year-old elf is still a child, a long, long way from adulthood.”

Thank goodness, I’m not a pervert. Dan Xingyu let out a long sigh of relief.

“But I don’t think a long-lived race with complete inherited memory would mistake one of their own,” Dan Xingyu pointed out.

And another thing: “Even if the elf in the resource zone made a mistake, surely the survival game wouldn’t make the same one?”

He was actually very accepting of Qi Yu being an elf.

After all, he’d long known the little mage wasn’t from Blue Star, but a local.

A local being an elf made perfect sense.

“Also, didn’t you just say that after receiving those memories, all your physical attributes improved dramatically?”

Dan Xingyu analyzed what Qi Yu had said: “Exceptional eyesight, light as a swallow—those all match my understanding of elves.”

He pondered, “Isn’t it possible that you really are an elf? Only, for some special reason, your bloodline was sealed. It wasn’t until you entered the survival game and encountered the elves that it finally began to awaken.”
